Top Rating Agencies Threaten U.S. With Credit Downgrade Over Debt Limit Chaos, Even If A Deal Is Made!

Two rating agencies placed the United States on a negative watch over recent negotiations to amend the debt ceiling between President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

The debt ceiling, a statute established by Congress that prevents the government from spending beyond a predetermined national debt limit of $31.4 trillion, exceeded the threshold earlier this year. Republicans want to link an increase in the debt limit with spending caps, while Democrats say they prefer separate processes for debt limit negotiations and budget reforms, a debate which occurs even as the government nears default as soon as June 1.

Inflation Rose in April!

The Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge unexpectedly climbed in April, leading to concerns that the U.S. central bank could raise interest rates for the 11th straight month in June.

In April, the annual personal consumption expenditure (PCE) price index rose to 4.4 percent, up from 4.2 percent, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). On a month-over-month basis, the headline PCE price index rose 0.4 percent, up from 0.1 percent in the previous month.

The core PCE, which excludes the volatile food and energy components, edged up to 4.7 percent year-over-year, up from 4.6 percent. This was also above the consensus estimate of 4.6 percent. Core PCE also increased by 0.4 percent from March to April, up from 0.3 percent.

Overall, the BEA noted that this was the first jump in PCE inflation since October, reflecting a boost in consumption of goods (0.8 percent) and services (0.3 percent).

Government data show that prices for goods swelled 2.1 percent, and prices for services surged 5.5 percent. Food prices skyrocketed to 6.9 percent, but energy prices declined to 6.3 percent.

California residents can no longer submit applications for home and business insurance to State Farm.

The new policy went into effect May 27, but it does not impact personal car insurance. The company will continue to service existing clients for their home and business insurance. This means clients can make claims on property already covered by their insurance.

“State Farm General Insurance Company made this decision due to historic increases in construction costs outpacing inflation, rapidly growing catastrophe exposure, and a challenging reinsurance market,” State Farm said in a press release. “It’s necessary to take these actions now to improve the company’s financial strength. We will continue to evaluate our approach based on changing market conditions.”

In 2021, State Farm was the largest insurance provider in California collecting over $7.2 billion in premiums, but the company suffered a loss of $4 billion.

In addition to covering repairs made to personal property, insurance companies may also be required to cover living expenses for those displaced, according to the California Department of Insurance.

Wildfire firefighting agencies responded to 7,396 fires that burned 2,569,386 acres in California in 2021.

US Still ‘Careening Towards Bankruptcy’ After Debt Ceiling Deal!

The United States will still be “careening towards bankruptcy” after President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) reached an agreement to raise the debt ceiling by $4 trillion, says Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fl.) in a new interview.

The 2024 presidential candidate appeared on “Fox & Friends” on Memorial Day and was asked about the potential fracture in the Republican Party following the White House and GOP leadership approving the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which some critics have dubbed the “Fiscal Irresponsibility Act.”

“Prior to this deal, our country was careening towards bankruptcy,” DeSantis said. “And after this deal, our country will still be careening towards bankruptcy.”

He noted that adding $4 trillion to the national debt over the next 18 months is an extension of the pandemic-era spending, and the federal government is “sticking with that” level of COVID spending. The deal, DeSantis said, is “totally inadequate” to bring the budget into a better position.

“They do these cycles to just get them through the next election,” he added. “And that’s ultimately one of the reasons why they continue to fail.”
