Why can I see my Email Address when I selected to hide it?

You can see your own icon because its your account. You can see everything concerning your own account. But you cannot see everything concerning someone else's account.

Click on some else's name to see their profile. It only shows minor stuff about them, and only if they filled that information in.

If you selected (checked the box) to have your email address hidden from others, then it is indeed hidden from other.
