The Truth about Socialism

Hoosier, you are lumping all services into one header and calling it "Socialism". Any government must provide the servises of a government, such as common defense or a road system. The problem is that their are many, you appear to be one, that believe the government should provide all services that you may ever need. While government must do the functions of governement, they are not responsible for your individual needs. Consider this, governments duties include maintaining a currency, yet, they are not responsible to ensure you get as much of that currency as you want. You as a private citizen must do your part to provide for your currency needs. There may be times when the public interest is served by welfare, but for the most part, it isn't a function of government to provide for your every need. The greatest issue with socialism is that it impowers the government into dictatorship. Remember the recent failed Cash for Clunckers? Did you happen to notice that you could use the public money to purchase a vehicle of the government's choosing? While no law forbiding the ownership of large vehicles would stand as legal, the government was able to decide for people which cars or trucks they would be buying. In almost every area where the government claims to be assisting our needs, it is actually dictating what goods and services that we will be able to purchase. When they "Assist" in home ownership they are telling you which homes you may buy. While they assert that the funding is be made by the government, the government is recieving the money to fund from public funds. Look at the Obamacare law. While the government isn't even paying for the insurance, they dictate what coverage we will be buying. Because of government intrusion into the marketplace the prices always rise. Let the government buy those goods and services needed for maintaining government and stay out of the Big Brother business. Later I'll show you how the government is using tax code to regulate what the Constitution would never allow, even under the most liberal interpetations.

Consider the consolidation of the welfare state by the Social Security Act; the undermining of free-labor markets by an ongoing series of statutes; the provision of health care for welfare recipients and the elderly through Medicaid and Medicare; the microregulation of business activity through the antitrust laws; the intrusive and costly environmental laws; and the massive spending on health, education, and various forms of welfare.


 
I consider all of that to be among the reasons the US is a partially great country.
 
Take them away and you have fascism and feudalism, evil medieval style.

Excessive governmental controls on society did not deliver on their promises and that their ideology actually delivered dismal economic results. But more importantly it produces a psychological change in the character of the people in that man's desire to better himself is what drives him to succeed and also improves the way of life for those around him. Socialism strips man of his desire to succeed.
