U.S. crude oil production peaked in 1970 at 9.6 million barrels per day (BPD). In 2000, U.S. crude production averaged 5.8 million BPD.
 
 
The International Energy Agency confirmed its forecast for global oil demand for 2011, expecting it to rise by 1.4 million barrels a day, to 89.4 million barrels a day.
 
The Paris-based IEA said additional oil use by Japan for power generation and reconstruction after the March earthquake and tsunami had mostly offset some downward adjustments from, for example, Russia and Brazil.
 
In London, Brent crude for May delivery was up 86 cents to $124.84 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.
 
Traders also will be watching the release of updated figures for U.S oil stockpiles.'
 
Data for the week ending April 8 is expected to show a build of 1.6 million barrels in crude oil stocks and a draw of 1.25 million barrels in gasoline stocks, according to a survey of analysts by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos.
 
The American Petroleum Institute will release its report on oil stocks later Tuesday, while the report from the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration — the market benchmark — will be out on Wednesday.
 
OPEC member Kuwait has temporarily halted oil export operations due to bad weather, a spokesman for the oil sector said on Wednesday.
 
Oil also remained supported by unrest in the Middle East and Africa as pro-democracy protests flared up across the region while Libya is in a stalemate after an African Union-sponsored peace plan collapsed this week.
 
"With the Middle East and North Africa crisis, there is at least a 20 percent premium built in oil prices," Ben Le Brun, Sydney-based analyst at CMC Markets said.
 
Foreign ministers meet in Qatar on Wednesday for talks on Libya's future.
 
Obama called for the United States to reduce its oil imports by one-third over the next decade.
