Mamdani's campaign stated that these funds may have come from U.S. citizens or permanent residents living abroad, which is permissible, but acknowledged some were impermissible and have issued refunds for a portion of them.

The CFB is currently auditing all campaigns from that election cycle, including Mamdani's.
