Mayor-President Kip Holden announced a “gas for guns” buyback program Monday in which people will be offered Circle K gas coupons worth $50 to $200 for each qualifying handgun and assault weapon they submit to authorities.
 
 
Holden said $40,000 will be available for the buyback program. The program will allow residents to safely dispose of firearms and ammunition that they no longer want to own or secure in their homes, he said.
 
 
“This is a no-questions-asked, voluntary gun buyback program,” Holden said during a joint news conference in the Metro Council chambers with law enforcement officials.
 
 
District Attorney Hillar Moore III said local authorities have been working out details of the buyback program over the past three months. He said that Circle K is putting $15,000 up to help, with drug forfeiture money used for the remainder.
 
 
He said officials decided to offer gas credit cards rather than cash, as other cities have typically done, to avoid a situation of people possibly using the money to buy drugs or other guns.
 
 
A handgun .38-caliber or less can be exchanged for a $50 gas coupon, while a handgun of .38-caliber or more can be exchanged for gas coupons worth $100, Moore said. An “assault-style rifle” can be exchanged for $200.

Have any of you simpletons given any thought to the possibility that some widow who`s husband has been dead for several years has no use for the gun. When they have these programs in my part of the country the guns are taken to a steel mill and melted down. Additionally many of these buyback programs violate federal law as they do not use a FFL dealer to take in the weapons!

It`s stealing when someone breaks into a home and just takes it. The NRA can challenge the legality of these programs which have been going on for years.
