The United states further should encourage democracy where we can, especially in our own backyard in south America which has suffered under dictatorship and military rule all too commonly, at times shamefully with the backing of the United States.

Yes, especially with some Past-Presidents who helped replace democratically-elected Presidents with military dictatorships (like Nicaragua)... and tried with others (Chavez).

It happened throughout Latin America for generations, one of the most aggregious being Chile which became a decades long brutal dictatorship. Now thankfully it has retruend to constitutional democracy.

"The Chilean coup d'état of 1973 was a watershed event in the history of Chile and the Soviet-American Cold War. On 11 September 1973, the democratically elected President of Chile Salvador Allende was overthrown in a CIA-backed Chilean military coup d’état.

A military junta took control of the government, composed of the heads of the Air Force, Navy, Carabineros (police force) and the Army led by General Augusto Pinochet. General Pinochet assumed power and ended Allende's democratically elected Popular Unity government.

During the air raids and ground attacks that preceded the coup, Allende gave his last speech where he vowed to stay in the presidential palace. Direct witness accounts of his death agree that he committed suicide in the presidential palace. After the coup Pinochet established a military dictatorship that ruled Chile until 1990 and that was marked by severe human rights violations. A weak insurgence movement against the Pinochet government was maintained inside Chile by elements sympathetic to the former Allende government.

Amazed....Yes I believe in democracy, but marxism leads countries into dictatorships and strong man rule a person who has control of the military in most every case. If you had read on down a little you would have come across a list of countries, marxist countries.Maybe you should take a look at some of them, and determine if you really think they are democracy's. I would have posted this sooner but the board seems have slowed down again.

Actually she is not a marxist, that's spin from a right wing british rag. She is a democratic socialist of a very mild sort as her predecessor Lula is, who has completed his term and is stepping down. Brazil is one of the most democratic countries in the world.

These are verifiable facts and not right wing message board bullshit.

To oppose democratic rule and the will of the Brazilian people is anti democratic.

What you morons are is ignorant.

And Brazil is decades ahead of the U.S. in green energy, and has the world's biggest, most efficient Ford plant, produces, uses and exports ethanol for $1 a gallon, and has a booming oil business that exports 100% of what they produce.
