The organization said in a press release that it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in order to "equitably compensate victims who were harmed during their time in Scouting and continue carrying out its mission for years to come."

The Boy Scouts will use the bankruptcy process to establish a Victims Compensation Trust to provide "equitable compensation to victims."
"The BSA cares deeply about all victims of abuse and sincerely apologizes to anyone who was harmed during their time in Scouting. We are outraged that there have been times when individuals took advantage of our programs to harm innocent children," Roger Mosby, president and CEO, said in the release. "While we know nothing can undo the tragic abuse that victims suffered, we believe the Chapter 11 process – with the proposed Trust structure – will provide equitable compensation to all victims while maintaining the BSA's important mission."

It was revealed last year that nearly 8,000 leaders in Boy Scouts had been accused of sexually abusing children dating back decades, and victims have come forward accusing hundreds more since then, lawyers said.

The organization first considered filing for bankruptcy in December 2018 amid the growing costs of the lawsuits and hired a law firm to explore the option. Tuesday's bankruptcy declaration, filed in Delaware, will delay pending lawsuits and establish a deadline for when former members can file claims.

According to the bankruptcy claim, the Boy Scouts estimated its liabilities to be $500 million to $1 billion.

The organization said programs, including meetings, activities, events, adventures and service projects will continue, and the organization "fully intends to maintain its commitments to its members, families, volunteer leaders, employees, retirees, donors and alumni to the fullest extent permitted by bankruptcy laws."
