The average age of cars and trucks in the U.S. has hit a record 11.8 years, as better quality and technology allows people to keep them on the road longer.

The 2019 figures from data provider IHS Markit show that the rate of increase is slowing, but the average age is still expected to go over 12 years early in
the next decade. The average age is up 0.1 years from 2018.

frankly, I'm a tightwad who drives an American mid-size car. (except for the Geo Prism) I drive 20-25k/year.  40+ year career in outside sales.  Every car I've bought - new or used - went over 200,000 miles before heading to the scrap heap.


currently happy with a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu with 45k on it.


Americans also have more cars these days.  When I grew up in the city, we had "the family car".  Today, three of us have our own cars.  Friends of mine have 2-3 cars...a truck/, the everyday car and the "toy", either a vintage car or a sportster convertible.  So, owning any one car over a longer period of time would seem accurate.

Jjust recently bought a new Hybrid. Getting an average of 51 mpg. Lots of cool technology.
