A day in the ferns

Here in Washington state, sword fern is often considered an invasive weed, but I think they're beautiful.  So, I spent yesterday cleaning out all the deadfall from winter and pulling weeds.  Then my neighbor brought over a bunch of bedding plants that he "got tired of planting after 10 trays)...so I plopped those in the ground.  It might not look like much to some people, but it's a vast improvement over the weeds and blackberries...LOL

Nice job you did there! I love ferns...this photo is from my last property. I cleared out the underbrush and kept the ferns.

They are lovely, aren't they?

the one in the 1st photo will be about 5 foot across by the end of summer.
The winter cold and massive snow really beat them down and I filled the 96 gallon green can and toted at least 3 more wheelbarrows full of fronds away.

I'm about a quarter of the way done, LOL...

It sure looks nice. I am thinking of digging up some ferns farther out in the woods and putting them close to the wall out back....gonna wait til it's cooler though.

My battles with the blackberries, and even all that ground cover, which is called creeping buttercup, will last forever, but there is just something so serene about the fronds waving in the breeze, and the shade of the forest to make time stand still.  I have been putting wind chimes in the trees and will be putting up a hammock for my teen aged nieces and nephews to enjoy when they visit. 

My husband keeps telling me to slow down, but once you get outside, you just want to work till dark, it's very cathartic and inspiring to see the progress.  Someday, it will be done.

The ferns are lovely and they emit a peaceful feeling.  Green and serene.
