FBI arrests leader of militia group that detained hundreds of migrants at gunpoint

Larry Hopkins was arrested on charges of being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.

The FBI on Saturday arrested the leader of the heavily-armed vigilante group that had illegally detained over 300 migrants trying to cross the border from Mexico and into New Mexico.

Larry Hopkins (AKA Johnny Horton Jr., Scott Alan Curtiss, and code name “Striker”) is the leader of the United Constitutional Patriots (UCP), a group that has been accused of impersonating law enforcement at the border. He was arrested in Oregon in 2006 on suspicion of impersonating law enforcement and for being a felon in possession of firearms.

Larry Mitchell Hopkins, 69, the alleged "commander" of an armed militia group accused of illegally detaining migrants in New Mexico near the United States-Mexico border, made an initial appearance in federal court in Las Cruces on Monday morning.

Larry Mitchell Hopkins, 69, who goes by the name of Johnny Horton Jr., is allegedly the leader of a militia based at his home in a trailer park in northern New Mexico.

A federal complaint document stated that the FBI began looking into Hopkin's group at least two years ago and had reports that he had made threats against Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and George Soros.

Hopkins was arrested in Sunland Park Saturday by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on a federal complaint alleging he is a convicted felon in possession of firearms.

A prohibited person with a gun is worth 10 years in prison on a federal level. Hope he gets it. Same is true of any felon in possession of a gun.

his group was “training” to kill former President Barack Obama, former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and billionaire George
Soros, according to an FBI affidavit.

The affidavit was part of the criminal complaint against Larry Mitchell Hopkins, who was arrested Saturday on a federal complaint charging him
with being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition. Hopkins appeared Monday in federal court in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Hopkins, 69, is the “commander” of the United Constitutional Patriots, whose armed members are seen in the group’s videos posted recently on
social media that show them rounding up and holding immigrants in New Mexico until border agents arrive.
