US ranks 11th in mass shootings per capita

A number of top-ranking Democrats have oft-repeated a claim that the United States has far more mass shootings than in other Western countries.

But according to a study on mass shootings around the globe, the United States ranks 11th on a list of countries which lead the world in mass shootings per capita.

The study, led by economist John Lott at the Crime Research Prevention Center, is based on data from 2009 to 2015.

So where does the United States actually stand? Here is the list of the 18 countries with the highest rate of deaths from public mass shootings per million people:

When adjusted for population, the United States ranks in the upper half of their list of 11 countries, ranking higher than Australia, Canada, China, England, France, Germany and Mexico. The United States did rank lower than three countries -- Norway, Finland and Switzerland -- but they have populations so small that one or two mass-casualty events can produce a relatively high per capita rate.

john lott is a right wing liar and bullshit statistician.  He actually wrote a book called "More guns, less crime."  Even a right winger should instinctively know how stupid that is. He cherry picks data, and picks years and groups of years that back up his agenda- to help the NRA lie about how goddamn out of control gun violence is in this country compared to others.  For instance, this report by this lying asshole, even though the article came out two days ago, covered the years 2009-2015-  why?  I would bet because if he didn't go back that far, it wouldn't show a lot of mass shooting deaths that occurred years ago in countries that he lyingly ranks higher, and if he does go back to 2015, it does not cover the many, many mass shooting deaths we have had since 2015.  One report that counts a mass shooting as 3 deaths, not including the shooter, since 2015, includes 2016, where there were 71 killed, including 49 shot to death in the Florida disco.  In 2017, 112 shot to death, including 58 in the Las Vegas shooting,  and more than 17 killed so far this year, as that was the body count in the recent school shooting. He also did not explain what he counts as a "mass shooting." My bet is he looked at the numbers and chose a minimum number that would be best to try and show his bias.  He gets paid mainly by right wing gun nuts and gun nut defenders to spew this bullshit, and his books are dumbfuck inaccurate gun nut friendly bullshit designed to be sold to stupid, gullible gun nuts.  He is a paid tool of the NRA, like almost all republican politicians, and a lying bag of shit.
