"Fire the Job Killers,"

We wake up this morning to find out that the monthly jobless rate climbed to 9.6% for the month of August. A meager 67,000 private sector jobs were created, and now the Obama administration is thinking of taking emergency steps to boost the economy prior to the November elections.

According to Politico, "Administration officials have been huddling almost continuously during the past week, brainstorming for ideas that would boost employment without hiking the massive federal deficit - with Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner rushing to the West Wing for further consultations late Thursday."

If only the Obama Administration had this mentality from the get-go, and embraced at least a few of the many job-creating solutions that we've been proposing in our Jobs First plan. (To see our plan, part of which is now a bill in Congress, go here and sign your name in support)

Unfortunately it's now too late for the President to do much of anything to turn the economy around before the November elections, when political analysts expect massive losses for the President's allies.

But there is one emergency step President Obama could take that we would applaud, and that is the prompt firing of Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Larry Summers, the head of the National Economic Council. President Obama must be willing to hold his administration officials accountable for failure.

Just the other day, Newt called upon the President to do just that in his newsletter titled "Fire the Job Killers," which you can read right here.

According to Newt, "There could be no stronger signal from President Obama that his economic policies have not worked and that it is time for a change in direction than by replacing his economic team to get new ideas and new perspectives into the Oval Office."

Now that the jobless rate has climbed again to 9.6%, action is more necessary than ever.

President Obama may not embrace pro-jobs policies, but perhaps he could embrace accountability.

That truly would be a gift to the American people this Labor Day weekend.
