That's a great idea - we do something similar in our group of Brits.  We have knitted the warm slipper socks  for the guys and girls on the subs and aircraft carriers as it gets so cold.  I think we made over 100 pairs between us and I was doing this a lot until I had to stop knitting to let my torn rotator cuff heal.   We also do the care packages though.   I'll save the website for our group.
