Hawking is an amazing intellect, but he is suffering from a debilitating disease.  He is an avowed atheist as a result.

Mr. Hawking has been blessed with an astounding intellect, and I admire his determination and tenacity. His opinions about God are his own. Science is a powerful tool that has allowed us to gain increasing understanding of  the mechanics of our planet and the universe. If he is satisfied with the answers he has found regarding the origin of the universe and mankind, good for him. Science and religion are not in conflict, how could they be? People create conflict by assuming one, and only one of them can be correct. Is it so hard to imagine a universe where God exists, and science helps mankind better understand how it works?
