My kids, when young, were taught to never touch a gun. When they got older, I taught them safe gun handling practices. Today, it is just me and my wife. My gun is in a closet at the other end of our bedroom. But we both have professionally balanced throwing knifes on our nightstands, plus long blades close at hand. We practice regularly and before you say, "never bring a knife to a gunfight", understand, both of us can put a 6 inch blade in a half inch circle at 25 ft. in near darkness. Our long blades are full tang, battle ready blades, made by a highly respected blade smith.  We are also proficient archers and well skilled with the crossbow.
