I have a habit of receiving a new being at face value.  Perhaps it is old fashioned of me, or just plain ignorant,  to give the benefit of the doubt to a stranger and presume he is presenting himself as he is.

  Ya, I have paid a price on a few occasions for this life attitude, but I'd rather suffer those hits than reach out to a stranger with a preconceived notion that he is "out to get me"

That is a good philosophy IMHO Byte. I feel the same way. I do not base my friendships on a persons political leanings. I have conservative friends I would go to bat for any time, any place. I also have liberal acquaintances  I avoid like the plague, despite my own far left leanings. If you only ever associate with folks just like yourself, you severely limit your learning potential.
