 A sign that said "Islam is welcome here" has mysteriously disappeared from the planned site of the Muslim mosque and cultural center near Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan.
It went missing on Tuesday morning, a short time after Fox 5 News crews videotaped the sign. It is unclear who had erected the sign and who removed it.
The green and white sign was on a pole in front of the building that the nonprofit Cordoba Initiative plans to use.
Cordoba bought the property for $4 million and is seeking to raise tens of millions more to build the Islamic center and mosque.
The site is two blocks from Ground Zero, and has drawn intense criticism from man families of Sept. 11, 2001, victims.
What had been a controversial local issue has exploded into the national political scene after comments that President Obama made in favor of allowing a mosque to be built near New York City's Ground Zero.
"As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country," Obama said, weighing in for the first time on a controversy that has riven New York and the nation. "That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances... This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable."
The president made his remarks at a dinner at the White House celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
In doing so he waded into a national controversy that has sparked passionate and at times angry debate.
The next day Obama appeared to attempt to soften his remarks, saying he would not comment on the wisdom of building the mosque so close to Ground Zero.
