Why did Obama nix an historic site for a Mosque.

The building that they want to level and put a mosque in it’s place was designated a historical sight, because part of one of the jets that hit one of the towers fell through it. Once 10 million dollars, and a muslim group showed up, that designation was yanked. The very basis of the fight is over whether or not it should be a landmark.
on a more historical note, islamists have a long history of building huge structures/holy sites on places that they have demolished or conquered. it seems like something that is done to spit in the face of the infidels who suffered at their hand.
to reverse this thinking, would they be okay with Isreal destroying Mecca and building “Isreal II” in it’s place?
