Alaska is one of the few states (if not the only one) where the subsurface rights cannot be owned privately.  I am not allowed to own the mineral rights on my own land.

You admit you don't own the mineral rights Dan. Sounds like welfare to me. It's alright though, I don't think we could think any less of you just for being a freeloader. Your lack of caring for your fellow Americans have already taken care of that.
