Then, they took any reference to God out of the official Holiday and made it a non-work day.

The first thing that progressives did against Thanksgiving was to push Christmas. In the early days, most Americans did not celebrate Christmas. The seasons holiday was Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving had no taint of the Church of Rome, yet recognized God as who deserves our Thanks.

At the time our founders rejected holidays that they saw as being Catholic. That meant Christmas. If you read anything written then on the issue, the Catholic Church was never referred to as Catholic. It was always called, "Romanism", " Papacy " or something along that line. This mindset continued through the Civil War. If you get a chance may I recommend History of the United States, by Bancroft. The first couple of volumes, especially vol. 2, show how early settlers viewed Christmas and Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving was pure, holy, American while Christmas was a Satanic holiday made even more evil by the Papacy. I am just answering the question, WWV.
