I am proud of him. I am also proud of his mother, (except for the part that she wasn't home and neither was any adult). She obviously instructed him on the proper way to use the gun.

 its Obvious they live in a crappy 'Hood' and were well aware they need protection --When I was 12 I stayed home alone after school ..I had guns --I had run of the House and woods --But I never did anything wrong Because Id have to go to Grandmas House after school where they was Nothing to do except watch soap's

At 11 it is questionable as to whether he should be left alone - but he handled himself appropriately and commendably. And he protected his younger sibling. All things his mother probably instructed him to do.

All in all - I commend this boy's clear thinking and proactive acting. And I think so lowly of the two teenaged criminals who preyed on this boy and his sibling - and only wanted to harm them.
