Seven-year-old Elijah Dace was walking home from school with his brother and sister in Morgan Park on Wednesday afternoon when two gunmen jumped out from an alley, yelled, "What you be about?" and opened fire, according to police.


Elijah ran but realized he had been shot, police said. The bullet had gone through his shoulder.
The boy was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where a spokeswoman said he was listed in good condition Thursday morning.




Police said they were questioning a boy who was 16 or 17, but he was being uncooperative. They believe the shooters were gang members but do not think the boy was the target.
Elijah had been walking home from Shoop Academy, where he is a first-grader, when he was shot in the 10900 block of South Loomis Street around 3:20 p.m., police said.  He was about two blocks from his home.
The boy suffered a wound to his right shoulder and was taken by ambulance to Comer. The gunmen ran south of Loomis, police said. Six 9 mm shell casings were recovered at the scene.
