how does it block sunlight?

By being positioned between the Earth and the sun.  What happens when you position your hand between your eyes and the sun?  It blocks the sunlight, doesn't it?  Well, same thing with smoke.  It gets in between the Sun and the Earth.

it doesn't actually block sunlight from reaching the earth does it dan?  you were actually saying that soot particles absorb sunlight which heats them up.  and since those particles of soot are in the atmosphere this warms the atmosphere.
 
the only way soot could cool the atmosphere was it there was a layer of it in space above the planet's atmophsere that never let that sunlight get here in the first place.
 
and since the soot lays on the snow that soot which has absorbed the sunlight warms up and melts the snow.
 
now if it was just snow laying there and wasn't covered with this warmed up soot and since snow is light colored it doesn't absorb nearly as much sunlight, most of the sunlight is in fact reflected back into space from the snow.

Earth's atmosphere is 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.9% argon, and 0.03% carbon dioxide with very small percentages of other elements. Our atmosphere also contains water vapor. In addition, Earth's atmosphere contains traces of dust particles, pollen, plant grains and other solid particles.


carbon dioxide is part of earths carbon cycle, is an essential part of plant and human life.  Man made Global warming mythologist...want an easy explanation for something that has been occurring since we've been turning.

Yes it does.  Not 100%, but it does reflect some and it absorbs some.  The point being that it prevents some of the sun's energy from reaching Earth.

The lighter the soot is the more light it reflects.  No matter how dark it is, it reflects some.  There's no such thing as 100% absorption.
