Benghazi matters because four of our fellow citizens were murdered under terrifying circumstances. Benghazi matters because a diplomatic facility emblematic and representative of our country was attacked and burned on the anniversary of 9/11. Benghazi matters because Americans deserve to know the truth from those entrusted to lead and govern.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, is right to convene a select committee devoted to uncovering all relevant facts connected to Benghazi, just as the House committees of jurisdiction were right to investigate Benghazi before this. Despite the passage of 20 months, there remain unresolved questions.

Why was security for our facility in Libya inadequate, and why were repeated calls for additional security unheeded and, indeed, explicitly rejected? Was our military response during the pendency of the siege sufficient? And in the days and weeks after the attack, was the Obama administration transparent and forthright with our fellow Americans in describing the impetus behind the attack?


Moreover, no one has been arrested, prosecuted, or punished for the murders of our fellow Americans. These outstanding questions, and others, are legitimate, and seeking the answer to these questions should be an apolitical process.

Facts are neither Republican nor Democrat. While our fellow citizens are free to draw varying conclusions and inferences from the facts, surely there can be consensus that every relevant fact must be uncovered.

There are still witnesses whose testimony has not been heard. Just last week, we learned the administration has withheld relevant documents from Congress, despite a subpoena request. Some produced documents are so heavily redacted as to be meaningless. The select committee should strive to uncover every relevant witness, document or other piece of evidence so our fellow citizens can know the facts and the full truth.


“May justice be done, though the heavens fall.” That adage governed my time as a prosecutor in state and federal court, and it would serve us well as we uncover the truth about Benghazi.

The revelation of an email trail linking the Obama White House to the fabricated statement of the cause of the Benghazi debacle is not surprising — nor is the blind faith that Americans have put in a president who has consistently intended to deceive the electorate. Strategically fabricated on the eve of the 2012 presidential election, the Benghazi lies accomplished their task to get president Obama re-elected.

How long will Americans hold their delusional love for a morally corrupt leader? Obama may fool himself and others, but not history nor our country's enemies.

Then-Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta testified that he met with Obama on the afternoon of September 11, told him about what was happening in Benghazi, and never checked back in. Panetta says that Obama left the details on the handling of Benghazi “up to us.” The White House, Panetta said, never called for an update on the situation. Panetta had no conversations with Clinton.

The White House Did Everything in its Power to Protect Americans in Benghazi

This particular statement is hard to believe when there was no request made for military force to get involved or attempt to rescue personnel during the attack on the consulate. Deputy Ambassador Gregory Hicks stated that a special operations  unit was ready to board a plane to fly to Benghazi, but received orders saying they had no authority to go.

Why, with the lives of American citizens in danger, would the government decide to take no action to protect them from those who would do them harm? Furthermore, if the administration “did everything in their power,” why was additional security not provided on the ground despite numerous requests for protection?

Hillary Clinton Did Everything She Could to Protect State Department Personnel

Hillary Clinton claims to have exhausted her options and resources to protect state department personnel, but if this were true, where was she at 2 a.m. the night of the attacks? Clinton never called to get updates about the situation.

Barack Obama was also suspiciously absent from the situation room that night.
According to Leon Panetta, who was Secretary of Defense at the time of the Benghazi attack, he only briefed the president one time about the situation:



Should not the CIC(sic) be present in the situation room while America was under attack......

MILITARY.COM reported (during the Morsi ousting in Egypt), that US Pentagon officials declined to give specifics on conversations between DOD's Chuck Hagel and Egyptian Gen al-Sisi....

Although the officials would not discuss the specifics of the military- to-military talks, the U.S. would need Gen al-Sisi's approval to move through Egyptian air space if Washington decided to send Marines to aid in the evacuation of U.S. personnel.

READY TO ROLL About 550 Marines and their tilt-rotor MV-22 Osprey aircraft are at bases in Spain and Italy on standby if they are needed. A Navy Amphibious Ready Group with 4,000 Marines and sailors aboard, led by the helicopter assault ship Kearsarge, was also in the region following completion of the Eager Lion training exercises in Jordan.
