Just what we need more stupid people who do not know how to unload a weapon before putting it away

(Reuters) - Three people including a retired sheriff's deputy were wounded on Saturday at a gun show in North Carolina when a 12-gauge shotgun accidentally discharged as its owner was taking it out of its case, state officials said.
     The incident comes as the country debates gun control and the rights of gun owners after a man armed with an assault rifle killed 20 first graders and six adults last month at an elementary school in Connecticut - the deadliest of a string of U.S. shooting sprees last year.
     Saturday's shooting occurred when Gary Lynn Wilson, 36, of Wilmington, North Carolina, approached the entrance of the Dixie Gun and Knife Show in Raleigh to have his personal firearm inspected

It is even more fundamental than that.  The prime point of safety is the immediate moment.  In the case of guns, they must be considered load and ready the moment you touch them until proved safe in the immediate moment.  Until that happens a weapon must not be pointed in an unsafe direction.   Stop, think, look.  if there is a safe direction, USE  IT.  If there is not, do not touch the weapon.
 
Evey weapon is loaded and ready until visually observed to be otherwise.

Until a weapon is secured and noted as empty it's to remain pointed down range, in other words in a direction were it can do no harm.

If we passed laws outlawing all gun ownership then the children would be safe, thanks to President Obama.
