Coronavirus Outbreak Turns Deadly

In one of the most recent examples of cruise-ship drama, the Diamond Princess was placed under a two-week quarantine in Japan in February 2020 after several passengers tested positive for coronavirus. Testing later found at least 700 cases of the virus among the more than 3,700 passengers and crew members, and ultimately, at least seven passengers died.

The quarantine was harshly criticized, https://www.businessinsider.com/how-diamond-princess-cruise-ship-coronavirus-quarantine-went-wrong-2020-2
with experts saying that keeping passengers and crew members confined on the ship only helped the virus spread faster.

And Democrats were calling Trump all kinds of vulgar names for not allowing them to dock. Just as they called him Racist for closing the border to everyone not a citizen. Just as they called him Racist for saying the virus came from China (C H I N A ).

Had a Democrat been in charge there would have been boatloads of virus infections de-boarding and plane loads not going through self quarentine. And you can forget about having a Vaccine now (today), maybe next year.

I don’t think I would call that a “recent” story, but I was scheduled to be on that cruise ship the next month out of Tokyo harbor.  I wasn’t worried one bit about the outbreak.  I was just worried they might cancel my cruise ... which they did.

3rd Florida-based ship has outbreak, state cases hit record

https://www.yahoo.com/news/3rd-florida-based-ship-outbreak-164004393.html

Fri, December 24, 2021

A COVID-19 outbreak took place on a South Florida-based cruise ship for the third time this week, as the number of coronavirus cases in Florida hit its highest level since the start of the pandemic.

An undisclosed number of passengers and crew aboard the Carnival Freedom cruise caught the virus so the ship was denied entry to Bonaire and Aruba, Carnival said in a statement.

The ship has 2,497 passengers and 1,112 crew members and was scheduled to return to Miami on Sunday following an 8-day cruise. Passengers were required to be vaccinated and they were tested before leaving last Saturday, according to Carnival.

It was the third outbreak this week affecting cruise ships operated by Carnival and Royal Caribbean departing Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

Put a lot of people into a confined space together, and you're going to have a flu outbreak, no doubt...

The cruise industry should be old hat at this by now...seems they make the news daily with yet another Norovirus, or Norwalk virus, or some other kind of virus.  Rona is just another type.

Yes, johnny, the Diamond Princess story was two years ago.  You owe Chuck an apology.

New York is experiences it's highest number of cases since the pandemic began.  Why don't you talk about that, huh?

The only horror is the way the passengers are treated.

Exactly.  Getting ill is not unique to cruise ships.  You can get ill anywhere.  The nightmare comes from being confined to your cabin for two weeks.

Holland America cruise skips Mexico stop after positive Covid-19 tests

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/holland-america-cruise-skips-mexico-stop-positive-covid-19-tests-rcna9970

A Holland America Line cruise ship was on its way back to port Saturday after Mexican health officials would not allow guests to disembark in Puerto Vallarta following positive Covid-19 tests on board.

The health department of the Mexican state of Jalisco said 21 crew members tested positive for Covid upon arrival in Puerto Vallarta on Thursday.

It said passengers’ potential exposure meant they would not be allowed to disembark.

“Through onboard testing, we have confirmed that a small number of fully-vaccinated crew on Koningsdam tested positive for COVID-19,” Holland America said in a statement. “All are showing mild or no symptoms and are in isolation. Close contacts have been quarantined out of an abundance of caution.”

In the best of times, I wouldn`t be caught dead on a cruise ship. Most of those people are the ones I need a vacation from.

Don’t believe all the horror stories.  You are in charge of what you let bother you.

We've probably been on 20 of them.

The best was around the cape of South America with multiple stops - Patagonia, Falklands, Calving Glaciers, Chile, Argentina, etc.

There are several current cruises experiencing outbreaks and being denied mooring in some ports.  I saw a report on the news last night and one lady was livid.  All the pools were full, no one was wearing a mask, people in close confines...all I could think was...why were you on a cruise if you were that paranoid in the first place?

If there is any chance I will denied anything because of the china virus, vax status, or mask, I shall have nothing to do with it.  It's that simple.  Get over it, already.

Volcano Kills Cruisers

https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/cruises/2019/12/20/new-zealand-volcano-eruption-royal-caribbean-cruise-details-emerge/2673683001/

Excursions can be a highlight of cruising, but for several passengers, a much-anticipated stop to explore New Zealand's White Island became anything but.

The island's active volcano, a tourist magnet, blew in December 2019, killing at least 21 people. Many were on an excursion from the Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas, which had departed from Sydney two days earlier.

The company has since suspended tours of active volcanoes.

Winds, Skipped Ports Trigger Mutiny

Cruise itineraries are always subject to the weather, but passengers on the Norwegian Spirit were especially unlucky after departing in September 2019 for a two-week exploration of Scandinavia. High winds prevented stops in at least four ports, and fog made the Norweigian fjords impossible to glimpse.

Toilets began to back up, food began to spoil, and angry cruisers demanded a refund.

Norwegian ended up offering a 25% credit for a future cruise instead.

It's never been about your health, it's about money.  Follow the money.

They never shut down during all the Norovirus and Norwalk virus outbreaks, just "deep cleaned"...

Too snooty?  Stuffy?

just way too crowded tbh. and the food was ....underwhelming.  the drinking "packages" were horribly over priced and not worth it at all...

and the on board entertainment was average at best.  there was one dude, great comic...great stage prescence etc...but the rest....were pretty mediocre.

Yeah, the only way to get your money’s worth is if you’re a raging alcoholic, averaging 8 drinks a day.

The production shows in the Princess Theater are too boring.  I’d rather hang out in the piano bar/lounge.

I like Carnival cruises best.  They are the most party centric, least restrictive, anything goes cruises to be found.  I fell asleep in my cabin during the call for routine safety training that occurs soon after boarding, slept right through it, and they let it go.  They did worry were the heck I was, though.   :)

Carnival is a lot of fun.  Definitely for the younger crowd.  I’m glad they get the safety drill out of the way BEFORE sailing.

that reminds me...the last time I got really "sick" was on a cruise ship.

you know when you're sick, or just have minor cold or something..but after my cruise to Alaska and back I came down with something that ended up turning into an ear infection.  I rarely get sick so I knew I caught something.

Gibraltar has canceled official Christmas events and urged people to avoid gatherings to combat an “exponential” spike in COVID cases despite its entire adult population being fully vaccinated.

Known as “the most vaccinated place on earth,” technically more than 118 percent of the British Overseas territory’s population is fully vaxxed because Spaniards also enter the country to work every day.

CDC warns against cruises, regardless of vaccination status

https://apnews.com/article/coronavirus-pandemic-lifestyle-health-business-travel-c092c07a571566dd2e32163fa1f3a593

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned people on Thursday not to go on cruises, regardless of their vaccination status, because of onboard outbreaks fueled by the omicron variant.

The CDC said it has more than 90 cruise ships under investigation or observation as a result of COVID-19 cases. The agency did not disclose the number of infections.

“The virus that causes COVID-19 spreads easily between people in close quarters on board ships, and the chance of getting COVID-19 on cruise ships is very high,” even if people are fully vaccinated and have received a booster, the CDC said.
