Title: Strange bee nest
Post by: takncarabizniz on 09 15, 19, 03:10:29:PM
This nest suddenly showed up in our sitka spruce base.  It's probably been there a long time, but we just never noticed it and we've worked around the tree frequently and never even saw any bee action.
I am concerned as to how it was uncovered, and what kind of bees, or possibly hornets these are.  Any ideas?

This is the closest thing I can find on it...but very interesting work they did on that nest.

Our beekeeper stopped by and says they are yellow jackets.  Something uncovered the nest though, so we'll be watching for signs of bear coming through.

My friend was in a friend's old car not knowing there was a yellow jackets nest in the back and they suddenly appeared while they were driving.  They both got stung pretty badly and it was a wonder they didn't have an accident.  Hubby encountered a hornet's nest while he was up on the motorhome roof last year.  They had built a nest in the air conditioning unit.  He foolishly sprayed them and they swarmed out and attacked him.  It was a wonder he didn't fall off the roof but in his mad scramble to get down the ladder he somehow sprained his wrist.  He ended  up at the doctors and had a wrist cast.  He was stung 5 or 6 times too.  Be careful taken, they're lethal!

We sprayed it late last night and got a lot of the bees, but there is still activity today, so we'll try again tonight.  The key apparently, is to kill the queen.

If it doesn't work, we'll have to call someone.

Be careful with those bees. I try to ignore them around here....works most the time.

Even the honeybees don't like me, LOL.  I've been stung 3 times since they moved in.  Apparently it's my hairspray, and when it's not my hairspray, it's my sweat, LOL...sorry bees, can't change that.

So we pulled all the hive material and needles from the area and it looks like we got them all, hopefully the queen too.  We'll pick up alll the remnants and put them in the burn pile this weekend.
