Georgia Plans to Close Many of County's Polls

ATLANTA — Civil rights advocates are objecting to a proposal to close about 75 percent of polling locations in a predominantly black south Georgia county.

The Randolph County elections board is scheduled to meet Thursday to discuss a proposal that would eliminate seven of nine polling locations in the county, according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia. Included in the proposed closures is Cuthbert Middle School where nearly 97 percent of voters are black.

"There is strong evidence that this was done with intent to make it harder for African Americans," ACLU of Georgia attorney Sean Young said. The ACLU has sent a letter to the elections board demanding that the polling places remain open and has filed open records requests for information about the proposal to close the polling places.

County elections board members did not immediately respond Wednesday to a phone message seeking comment on the proposal.

Young and others from the ACLU plan to attend the elections board meeting Thursday.

According to the latest census figures, Randolph County's population is more than 61 percent of black, double the statewide percentage.

The median household income for the county was $30,358 in 2016, compared to $51,037 in the rest of the state. Nearly one-third of the county's residents live below the poverty line, compared to about 16 percent statewide, according to U.S. Census figures.

The closure of polling places will affect those who lack reliable transportation, the ACLU says. Public transit doesn't exist in much of the rural county, and 22 percent of the county's residents have no car. People who currently vote at the polling places that would close under the proposal would have to travel an additional 10 miles to vote, the ACLU says.

With no car or bus to reach a different polling location, this predominantly black, Democratic county will not be able to fairly vote, ACLU of Georgia executive director Andrea Young said.

"If you don't have a car and you want to vote in-person, you have to walk three-and-a-half hours," Sean Young said.

In 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court rolled back Voting Rights Act requirements that required many jurisdictions to receive permission before changing ways people are allowed to vote. They used to have to prove the voting changes weren't discriminatory, but that's no longer the case.

"This is an example of what localities are doing without the pre-clearance requirement," Andrea Young said.

In addition to statewide offices, Randolph County voters will also vote for state legislative seats in November. All nine polling locations were used during this year's primary and Republican run-off, so it is unclear why the locations would be closed down, Andrea Young said.

Who is "we" I've been making this point for a few years now, frankly it's not "special rights" they are LAWS that FORCE people to comply with their emotionally disturb sexual perversions, what's sad but expected, these clowns are running around thinking they are now being "accepted" they lack the ability to grasp the fact it's tolerance not acceptance, I was taught to respect everyone, sadly with the in your face flamboyance from the LGBTQ community I no longer have respect or tolerance for their sexual or emotional problems.

It's real easy to solve the voting problem, just go into the "predominately black" areas, count everyone over the age of 18 and just give that number to the Democrats, the accuracy there should be about 99 to 99.9% maybe higher.

In my state there are only 2 or 3 voting locations per county as the overwhelming majority of voting is done by mail!

Security Clearance?  When I requested separation from the active duty US Army in 1968,   I was a 1Lt serving at a local liberal arts college in Penna. as an ROTC instructor. I had been commissioned a 2Lt as an Infantry Officer, that however was not my choice, My branch assignment was as the AG Corp (Adjutant General) but was detailed Infantry for a 2 year basis. Not my choice.

i believe they called it "the needs of the Military...in other words they needed cannon fodder, not admin officers. At any rate they sent my young ass to Viet Nam... Thank you LBJ.  I did survive... it did make me promise myself, my Mother, My girlfriend, and the world that I would never again go into the combat zone. I knew when I left that hallowed hallways of a college that I was headed back to the combat zone.

All Officers had to have been granted a secret Security Clearance whether or not we ever handed any classified info or not.  Even then they had to go thru your educational records and got info from my old neighbors and school teachers. I received a SECRET Security Clearance from the US Army based on the back ground checks,  As I recall it took 3 or 4 months. 

Neither I nor anyone else really thought such a Security Clearance was a big deal.  Every one had a clearance, some even higher to Top Secret or (at that time I believe the highest was CRYPTOLOGIC.)  They were the guys in the basements at the Pentagon doing God Knows What) but I didn't know why I even had a Secret clearance.

At any rate, I had a SECRET security clearance...they did not say, Do you wish to keep it? nor did I even think about it.

I do not get what a big deal it is to keep a security clearance when you no longer have a job that requires it. I assumed that when I resigned my commission and turned in my military gear I would no longer need such things.

Because I served a couple of years in the Reserve as well Active Duty, I had no further obligation as a Reserve Officer,,,So I went back to civilian life and haven't missed it very much.active

I'm often asked to join in the local VFW parades... But no asks if I have a security clearance.

Not much of a choice... But thanks, at that time we still had a draft, I had lots of other plans... But in those days there were two choices, GO and serve, or ran away to Canada.

Since my family could trace their service back to the War of Independence... It did not seem like a lot of choices.
