a young Waylon Jennings who was drumming on their northern Midwest tour (in the middle of a severe winter!)
gave up his seat on the plane to an ill "big bopper" on the ill fated flight.

here is a pretty good story of the events in clear lake, iowa that night...

I also like the movie about Ritchie...La Bomba....tells a lot about the story too.
