Title: US Combat Troops Leaving Iraq
Post by: julianne on 08 18, 10, 06:44:03:PM
U.S. ending combat operations in IraqAfter 7½ years, last convoy of fighting forces leaving country
BREAKING NEWS

CAMP VIRGINIA, Kuwait — The last U.S. combat troops were crossing the border into Kuwait on Thursday morning, bringing to a close the active combat phase of a 7½-year war that overthrew the dictatorial regime of Saddam Hussein, forever defined the presidency of George W. Bush and left more than 4,400 American service members and tens of thousands of Iraqis dead.

The final convoy of the Army’s 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Lewis, Wash., were about to enter Kuwait shortly after 1:30 a.m. (6:30 p.m. Wednesday ET), carrying the last of the 14,000 U.S. combat forces in Iraq, said NBC’s Richard Engel, who has been traveling with the brigade as it moved out this week.

“We won! We won! It’s over! We brought democracy to Iraq!” a soldier shouted as fellow soldiers celebrated their arrival in Kuwait this week.

For Staff Sgt. Heon Hong of Guam, the brigade’s departure, which began over the weekend, marked the end of his third tour of duty in Iraq.

“I’m glad I’m here. I’m glad we’re done with Iraq,” Hong said as his transport arrived this week. Hopefully, I never come back to Iraq.”

Another soldier, Sgt. Devon Scarey of Deltona, Fla., said simply, “It feels awesome.”

Brig. Gen. Nick Tooliatos, deputy commanding general for First Theater Sustainment Command in Kuwait, stood at the border all night saluting each soldier as he or she crossed.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better honor than to greet some soldiers who have done great work for a year fighting our nation’s war, and to just be here and render honors to them and welcome them and thank them for a job well done,” Tooliatos said.

NBC & MSNBC have exclusive video.

Let's get ready to welcome them home.

What are you going to do about the 50000 left behind for an indefinite period while fighting continues.

What a farce post. You cheer that the enemy know we are leaving ,and can just wait to follow them back here to fight. Hurray for you and you Muslim love.

Beavis, are you even capable of being joyful for those troops who are on their way home and for the relief that their familes must feel?

Never mind.....

Cheryl, I'm not sure if you are old enough to remember but seeing this departure of our troops is a far cry from the sights we saw when our troops left Vietnam.

God Bless our troops and their families.

What did we gain from this war?

If anyone says we got rid of saddam, let me say we could have probably paid a sniper $50 to get him.

It breaks my heart thinking of the families who lost loved ones, those who lost limbs, those who have other permanent physical damage and the thousands who have mental problems now and those who will in the future. And then there is the matter of the trillions of dollars WE paid for. For absolutely NOTHING!!! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!

I hope those in the gwbush admin, especially cheney and the rest of the the PNAC suffer nightmares, every night for the rest of their lives.

Hi Juli

No I don't remember the scenes from Vietnam.  Just hearing Richard Engle interview that young soldier live after he crossed the border, was just too much for me...Being I am a mother of a son...I can only imagine how his mother and family must be feeling seeing their son/loved one finally coming home.

Prayerfully I hope the U.S. will never get engaged in something like this ever again

WAY TO GO OBAMA!

Cheryl, that brought tears to my eyes.

Daw, I did a bit of channel surfing during the MSNBC commercials and CNN covered it briefly but Fox is too busy still bitching about the Community Center in NY.

Daw and Juli

should we not be surprised that Fox is not covering this....

They enjoy keeping their audience in a frenzy.... that way the TeaParty/GOP leadership won't worry about relevant and responsible platforms to present to their supporters.  Its all they have to run on.

this type of divisiveness is what they believe is going to help them win elections.

I wonder what the faithful fox viewers, who may have loved ones serving there, think of them completely ignoring this historic moment. Are they going to believe whatever BS fox gives them for not carrying this?

Daw

sure they will...someway somehow, the Fox pundits will spin this moment into an Obama bash fest

get the dogs foaming at the mouth...all will be forgiven

BTW, BRAVO, Sen. Bob Graham had the courage to publicly oppose the Iraq invasion and he just said it was a "pack of lies". BRAVO Senator, we need you back in Congress.

I had to make a quick trip to the grocery store so I missed Senator Graham's remarks but let's not forget that Ted Kennedy, God rest his soul, and Nancy Pelosi also were very vocal in their oppostion to the Iraq war and voted against it.

Btw, while I was at the grocery store I asked the other people in line if they had heard the news and when I told them one lady, who has a nephew in the 4th Stryker brigade, burst into tears of joy and hugged me for telling her about it.
