Twitter was in meltdown when the verdict came Saturday night in the George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin trial. Facebookers like this one were among many writing their fair share of posts on the trial and its outcome.

One online site in particular captured considerable attention – well over 100,000 visits a day and a public post-trial thank-you from Robert Zimmerman, father of the younger Zimmerman: “I have thanked Mark Omara and Don West. Now I would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to you, our friends at CTH.”


The Conservative Treehouse (aka “CTH” and “The Last Refuge”) earned Zimmerman’s grateful acknowledgement because of its extraordinary investigative work undertaken throughout the saga, particularly in obtaining through Freedom of Information Act and publishing public records that revealed the corruption and racism connected to the charges and the trial itself, naming who was involved regardless of how high up the political food chain it went, in what the investigative bloggers called “The Zimmerman Railroading.”

Among its reports, Trayvon Martin’s drug use, explaining how the Skittles and Arizona Watermelon Fruit Juice Cocktail drink he carried that night are ingredients that, when mixed with dextromethorphan (DXM) cough syrup, create “Lean”, a concocted high which can cause psychosis and aggression over the longer term. According to the autopsy report, Martin’s liver showed damage consistent with DXM abuse.

What is DXM?

Dextromethorphan is a cough-suppressing ingredient found in a variety of over-the-counter cold and cough medications. Like PCP and Ketamine, dextromethorphan is a dissociative anesthetic, meaning DXM effects can include hallucinations.


What does it look like?

Cough syrup and cough and cold tablets or gel caps that are available without a prescription. Also, dextromethorphan can be purchased in a powder form, often over the internet.

How is it used?

Swallowed.

What are its short-term effects?

The effects of dextromethorphan abuse vary with the amount taken. Common DXM effects can include confusion, dizziness, double or blurred vision, slurred speech, impaired physical coordination, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, rapid heartbeat, drowsiness, numbness of fingers and toes, and disorientation. DXM abusers describe different “plateaus” ranging from mild distortions of color and sound to visual hallucinations and “out-of-body,” dissociative, sensations, and loss of motor control.

What are its long-term effects?

The abuse of cough medications including DXM can contain other ingredients, such as acetaminophen, which can be very dangerous when taken in large quantities. For example, large quantities of acetaminophen can damage the liver.
DXM is also sometimes abused with other drugs or alcohol, which can increase the dangerous physical effects.

The liver weighs 1110 grams and presents a brown, smooth, glistening surface.  focal patchy yellow discoloration, due to mild fatty metamorphosis is present.  On sectioning, the hepatic parenchyma is yellow-brown, homogeneous and congested.
 
 
The most common cause of fatty liver in the United States is alcoholism. In alcoholic fatty liver, over consumption of alcohol changes the way that the liver breaks down and stores fats. Often, people with chronic alcoholism also suffer from malnutrition by eating irregularly and not consuming a balanced diet. Conditions that can also cause fatty liver are other forms of malnutrition (especially when there is not enough protein in the diet), obesity, diabetes mellitus, and Reye's syndrome in children.  
 
If you start to google all the related topics on fatty liver and hepatic parenchyma, it's possible to deduce that this young was abusing something, most likely alcohol...but it also points, in many instances, to malnutrition and if he was steadily dieting on junk food, energy drinks, highly sweetened soft drinks and the like, he was also affecting his body's ability to remain healthy. 
 
Also, look at the portion of the report on the respiratory system-

  Does this indicate he was exposed to coal dust or is this the result of smoking pot?  Who the hell knew that smoking pot could damage the lungs as adversely as breathing in coal dust...this was a 17 year old kid!

  According to the internets, many things can cause congestion of the leptomeninges: everything from meningitis to encephalitis, or even asphysia or  traumatic brain injury...wasn't there video of Trayvon's "fight club" and I thought Rachael Jeantel testified about an MMA fight or something...
   
  I would say that this young man was on a very dangerous path in life to begin with.  His decision to circle back and confront George Zimmerman was his fatal mistake.
